Big Bang, Suspects hold on to win in triple overtimeWednesday, March 3rd, 2010 by Mr Lex
Big Bang, Suspects hold on to win in triple overtime The LA Hoopz stage was set on fire once again this past Sunday night.  Two of the league strongest and deepest teams squared off and created an instant classic for all in attendance. Starting off somewhat flat, it must be said that this game ended in a big bang way. Following the previous tough-love triller and erratic up and down play, Usual Suspects and No Mercy came out firing bricks and airballs. Little did those in attendence  know that the second half would bring high percentage shooting, aggressive defense, and one incredible ending! No Mercy suffered second loss to Usual Suspects, overall record 5-2 Stellar performances powered by Kenny Jones and Dion Currie, 25 & 18 points respectively No Mercy who had led at half time got out to an early second half lead. However just when the spectators thought that the Usual Suspects were out of this game for good; they rallied behind some inspired play by San Street, and some deadly sharp shooting from D. Bowie and Will Kieffer. The Usual suspects fought their way all the way back to tie the game up with less than 2 minutes on the clock. After trading baskets No Mercy and the Usual Suspects readied themselves for a tight finish. With 12 seconds left in regulation, No Mercy emerged from their time out with the ball in the hands of MVP candidate Kenny Jones. The Usual Suspects were not simply going to throw away all the hard work that they had put in to draw level, and they defended like it mattered! Kenny Jones could not find the room for the shot he wanted, and was forced into an ill advised three point shot form some 10 feet behind the line that barely shaved the front of the rim; we were going to overtime!! After a closely contested overtime period the game once again came down to the last shot! Down by 3 points with only 2.9 seconds on the clock; the Usual Suspects were faced with the unlikely chance of sinking a three to stay in the game. As the LAHOOPZ crowd gasped the ball landed in the hands of Marc Jones, who released a last ditched three point shot that amazingly rattled in as time expired. Double overtime again! As if scripted by Hollywood screenwriters; this remarkable game would once again come down to a last second shot. The Usual Suspects had clawed their way to a slim 1-point lead with 5 seconds left on the clock. Like every other big time player; Kenny Jones wanted the ball in his hands when it really counted. After receiving the inbounds pass in his own half Kenny Jones dribbled across half court and as time expired he launched a jumper under pressure from just inside the three-point line. The shot had the distance and for a while looked as if it had the accuracy, but as the buzzer sounded the ball rimmed out and with it crushed the hopes of No Mercy who had surrendered a 12 point second half lead. It finished Usual Suspects 65 and No Mercy 64. Players on both squads knew this was not the last dance. After the game only one question was asked. Dion Currie asked, “when do the playoffs begin?” Knowning their time will come again and next time the results will be different. Watch and see what happens, playoffs begin 3/15/10 @7pm. Schedule released shortly and based on second half Power Rankings. LEAGUE NOTES: All players be sure to arrive early prior to the tip-off to prevent delay. A technical foul will be assessed to the tardy team and play will commence shortly after. For questions or concerns see your nearest Hoopz Staff member. Playerz and Fanz be safe and keep the facility in tact for our friends. Stats Updated - No Mercy v Usual Suspects.
