POWER RANKINGS, summer session 2009Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 by Dr Hoopz
POWER RANKINGS, summer session 2009 Week Two 6) Hoop Dreams, 0-1 The dramatic loss in opening night had to be a huge blow to the Hoop Dreams. Losing by more than fifty points while managing to score only forty-six as a team has to make one think? What is the receipt for Hoop Dreams success? The front line was small, the back court was thin but the sky is the limit with good recruiting. Look for the leading guard Joseph Tucker, who hit 7 â 9 3FG in the loss to help lead a balanced attack from long distance and beyond. Joseph Tucker hinted in the loss to the Ususal Suspects, âwe must play better defense, better defense,â in order to compete. Add another backcourt mate and a couple of bigs and look for the dream to become true with Jason Douglas and Tristan Marin in the mix. Next Game: MFA 1.0 versus Hoop Dreams 6pm 7/26/09
5) Menâs Free Agents 1.0 (MFA 1.0), 0-2 After suffering two close losses to the elites, expect this team to rebound in more than one way. Gene Shepard is most definitely a proven performer with precision passing and a nice mid range game. Wearing #37, after Ron Artest, look for NBA type numbers from Shepard in a league thatâs heavily talented. Add Mitch Campbell, a modern day Tom Chambers, averaging a strong eight points and five rebounds a game to up those in the future; and a defensive specialist in George Garcia and they may take the league by storm. In only his first game, Mils H. Philips put on a display on craftsmanship with Gene Shepard to rock the house. Look for both players to continue to bring the run & gun style basketball is about in the coming weeks. Recruitment is a powerful tool look for MFA 1.0 to add more players prior to the postseason. Next Game: MFA 1.0 versus Hoop Dreams 6pm 7/26/09
4) Give It To You Later, 0-2 Records donât mean much when it comes to the postseason, just ask the Houston Rockets of 1995 and 1996. Give It To You Later may have their own version of Hakeem, in Dan Zinchuk, but being down early in the season doesnât mean they will not make noise in the running of the gold cup. Having lost two close games by a total of 11 points with the most recent due to having only four players is not how a contender wants to start the season. Look for Dave Miller and crew to regroup next week and keep an close eye on the budding star Vincent Carusso, a forward that sixth in scoring and seventh in league rebounding. Mr. D-D is most definitely a force in the post and handling the rock 90+ feet. Next Game: Give It To You Later versus Usual Suspects 4pm 7/26/09
3) Menâs Free Agents 2.0 (MFA 2.0)
One word defines this team, recruitment. Since the big win over Give It To You Later, MFA 2.0 has managed to add three high caliber players. Look for these guys to join and add to what Chris Anderson, Junior Benitez and Jeff OâHarrow bring to the table. Sounds decisions and quick hands and feet are a receipt for winning in LA Hoopz. The GM has been thrilled with last weeks victory and the signing of three future All Stars. Also the second leading scorer of in the league, Chris Anderson, is anxious to get back out there and show the Hoopz Fanz what he can do. In the words of Terrell Owens, âget yaâ popcorn ready, itâs gonna be a good one.â Weâve already seen what Mils H. Philips can do, wait and see what his MIA partners will do next week. Next Game: MFA 2.0 versus Bru Dogs 5pm 7/26/09
2) Bru Dogs
After finishing off the MFA 1.0 and Give It To You Later in the opening weeks of the season, they are ready to take on the elites of Los Angeles Hoopz. Look for Andrew Schmoller, second league leading rebounder and the league leader in blocks; and dominant mate, Marc Doche whom is fourth in rebounding and seventh in scoring help lead the charge. The skyâs the limit for this team with hard nosed defense and a knat for the loose balls, a potent combination that will prove dominance over time. Look for the Bru Dogs to continue their streak of dominate play and work teams down to the wire. Close games are hard to finish off, which seems to be no problem for the Bru Dogs. Next Game: Bru Dogs versus MFA 2.0 5pm 7/26/09
1) Usual Suspects
Pouring-in a near dollar on Hoop Dreams in the first game of the season, the 98-46 victory was a resounding statement for a hungry team destined for greatness. Alexander Cuba is currently leading the lead in assists, while Marc Jones is the energy man needed to work the bigs and wear down the smalls of LA Hoopz. The man that seems to get all the loose balls, Deante Horton, will pick up where he left off last week; knocking on the door for a double-double and finishing at the rim. The bench is deep as well. Berry Canty, Mark Jeanetta, Carlyle Holiday and William Kieffer are only as good as they need to be. As the strongest bench in the league look for Alexander Cuba and friends to run & gun their way to the winners circle, unless someone has something to say. Tune in and see how the Usual Suspects are dominating their opponents and decide if this will be the receipt for success for earning the Gold Cup. Next Game: Give It To You Later versus Usual Suspects 4pm 7/26/09 LEAGUE NOTES: Spaces are still available for the this and the upcoming season.
